Bridging the Gap: Students Experience the Business of Barbering at Bleu Suede Barber Lounge

On March 25, the Spring 2026 Bridging the Gap Initiative launched one of its first immersive experiences with a powerful visit to Bleu Suede Barber Lounge, an environment where culture, entrepreneurship, and personal development intersect.

This experience focused on the beauty and health industry, with a specific emphasis on the evolving landscape of barbering. More than just a trade, students were introduced to barbering as a dynamic career pathway rooted in discipline, branding, and business ownership.

At the center of the experience was image consultant, master barber, and CEO Mike Leakez, who provided students with an authentic and inspiring look into the profession. His message was clear: barbering is about far more than the cut; it’s about building relationships, creating value, and understanding the business behind the craft.

Leakez shared his personal journey, beginning with humble roots, cutting hair on a college campus. What started as a skill quickly evolved into a calling. Through consistency, excellence, and a commitment to growth, he transitioned from campus cuts to serving professional athletes and high-level business leaders.

But beyond his success, it was his transparency that resonated most with students.

He spoke candidly about discovering his purpose, learning to recognize his worth, and navigating the mindset shift required to grow as an entrepreneur. Students were not only exposed to the technical side of barbering but also to the principles of branding, client experience, pricing, and long-term vision.

The visit created a space where students could see themselves in the industry, not just as participants but as future leaders and business owners.

Experiences like this are at the heart of the Bridging the Gap Initiative. By connecting students directly with professionals in their desired fields, the program provides more than exploration; it delivers access, exposure, and the confidence to pursue what once felt out of reach.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Bleu Suede Barber Lounge and Mike Leakez for investing in our students and helping redefine what’s possible.
